Why Do Fools Fall In Love?

I've heard about several recent divorces and am wondering why some pairings of seemingly nice people go the distance while others fall apart.

Is there a secret ingredient that turns attraction and friendship into a lifelong commitment?  And what is it that can morph white-hot passion into boredom or bitterness?

I assure you, I do not have a clue.
